  1. The best months to see the Aurora Borealis, or “Northern Lights”, are February, March, September, and October although I have seen them as early as August and as late as April-May. This phenomenon is best seen on a clear night when the moon is not full. Probably the best place to see them are in Fairbanks, Alaska.

But you don’t need to be in Alaska to see them. I have lived in Michigan in the Upper Peninsula and have watched them with my father on clear nights. I live in central Minnesota now and I have seen them here also.

  3. It’s been my experience that the best time to see the Northern Lights is usually from December to early February, the peak of the winter season, but I’ve also seen ‘em as early as October and November in really cold winters.

The best nights are when it’s super cold (*well* below freezing), when there’s either no moon or only a sliver, and usually after midnight. There are even hotels in Anchorage that offer a wake-up call if the Lights are out.

Here are two web sites that offer Northern Lights forecasting:

Website run by the Univ. of Alaska Fairbanks

Website for the Anchorage Daily News with a teeny tiny little link on the front page that says ‘Aurora’
